Seven Card Stud is a classic and challenging variant of poker that rewards skill and strategy over luck. In this game, players are dealt seven cards throughout the hand, aiming to create the best possible five-card poker hand. Unlike Texas Hold’em and Omaha, Seven Card Stud typically features a Limit betting structure, providing a different dynamic to the game.
Basic Rules of Seven Card Stud
Ante: Before each hand, players must ante up, contributing a nominal amount to the pot to be dealt into the hand. The ante varies depending on the specific game being played.
Third Street: At the beginning of the hand, each player is dealt three cards: two face-down hole cards and one face-up card. The player showing the lowest exposed card is required to start the action with either a nominal bet or a full bet, depending on the game’s rules.
Fourth Street: After betting on Third Street, each player receives another exposed card, called Fourth Street. The player with the highest-ranking exposed cards initiates the betting. If any player shows a pair, a larger betting increment is introduced for the remainder of this round.
Fifth Street: Players receive another exposed card, known as Fifth Street, followed by a betting round. From Fifth Street pesowin onward, bets are in big bet increments.
Sixth Street: Each player is dealt another exposed card, Sixth Street, followed by another round of betting.
Seventh Street (River): The final card, Seventh Street, is dealt face-down to each player. Another betting round occurs.
Showdown and Determining the Winner
If multiple players remain after the final betting round, a showdown occurs. The player who made the last bet or raise reveals their cards first. If there was no bet in the final round, the player in the earliest position reveals their cards first. Hands are then exposed clockwise around the table, and the best five-card poker hand wins the pot. In case of identical hands, the pot is split equally among the winners.
Player Betting Options
In Seven Card Stud, players have several betting options: fold, check, bet, call, or raise. The available pesowin actions depend on the previous actions of other players and the specific rules of the game being played.
Additional Stud Rules and Situations
Determining the Bring-In: In case of ties in card rank for determining the bring-in, suits are used to break the tie. Suits are ranked alphabetically, with clubs being the lowest and spades the highest.
All-In Situations: If the player with the lowest exposed card on Third Street is all-in for the ante and cannot meet the required bring-in bet, the bring-in position moves to the next player clockwise.
Optional Big Bet: If any player shows a pair on Fourth Street, betting can be opened or raised for one big bet. This higher bet amount continues for the rest of Fourth Street.
Dealing with Card Shortage: In rare instances where there are not enough cards to deal Seventh Street, a single community card is dealt face-up on the table to be shared by all remaining players.
